How To Input Electric Guitar Into Garageband Ipad
When you play your guitar or bass, a circle next to the Input Settings button lights green to show that GarageBand is receiving input from your instrument. If the circle turns red, lower the volume on your instrument to prevent distortion. An electric guitar produces an analogue audio signal which passes through an amplifier and out to speakers. To connect the guitar to a computer you will have to link it with an analogue cable either direct from the guitar's output jack and into the computer's microphone socket, or into an amplifier then from the amplifier's line out socket into the computer's line in socket.

The online user guide for GarageBand > iPad states that I can connect an electric guitar (or bass) for use with GarageBand for iOS, however, there are no instructions for doing so in the iPad portion of the online guide – just in the GarageBand for Mac section. (I'm thinking this might be an error in the guide)
My question: is it indeed possible to connect an electric guitar to an iPad? (I'm skeptical, because there's no audio-in port)
In order to take advantage of the great guitar-processing apps available for the iPad and iPhone, you need a way to get the signal from your guitar or bass into your iOS device. For that, you’ll need a dedicated guitar interface or a more fully featured audio interface that can handle not only guitar and bass connections but also microphones and sometimes even MIDI as well.

Jam+ connects your electric guitar, bass, acoustic instrument with pickup, dynamic mic or keyboard to your iOS device or computer. Second question: is there some secondary software that can be used to connect a guitar or bass? (just checking…)
BTW, I'm using an older iPad 3 (iOS 9), if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance for any guidance on this

While many would argue that the only way to accurately capture an electric guitar performance is by mic’ing up your amplifier and hitting record, in my latest video I share 3 ways that you can directly input your guitar into your Mac so that you can record it in GarageBand.
Directly inputting (or ‘DI-ing’) your instrument in this way gives you more control over how your recording sounds if you choose to use Garageband’s built in amp designer and/or Audio Unit plug ins.
